I May Destroy You, a sexual consent drama produced by British star Michaela Coel, is set to debut on 1 Magic on Wednesday, August 26 at 21:30.
Previously known as 22nd January, “the series explores the question of sexual consent in contemporary life and how, in the new landscape of dating and relationships, we make the distinction between liberation and exploitation,” wrote Deadline.
The series’ concept came after Coel revealed during her MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in 2018 that she was a victim of sexual assault during the time Chewing Gum, a British comedy, was written.
I May Destroy You consists of a list of up and coming artists, including Weruche Opia (Inside No9), Paapa Essiedu (Kiri) Aml Ameen (Yardie), Adam James (Belgravia), Sarah Niles (Catastrophe) and Ann Akin (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams).
The show centres around Arabella – a self-assured, care-free young lady from London. While on holiday with her friends in Italy, Arabella meets a writer who goes from holiday-fling to aspirational boyfriend. During a night out, her drink is spiked with a date-rape drug and she starts questioning and rebuilding every element of her life.
Arabella is a highly talented individual who’s labelled as the voice of her generation. However, her first triumph distracts her from writing her second novel and she’s also in danger of becoming self-absorbed. After she is sexually assaulted in a nightclub, Arabella’s life changes for good and it forces her to rethink every aspect of her life.
Picking up the pieces, Arabella struggles to come to terms with her ordeal. She starts her journey to self-discovery – a path, filled with pain and sometimes, laughter. T leads her to a few surprising places and some controversial truths.
I May Destroy You airs on Wednesdays at 21:30 on 1 Magic, DS tv Channel 103.
