Writers, film critics and film and TV enthusiasts have used adjectives such as “piercing and relatable”, “terrifically cool”, “the greatest remake of anything ever” and “witty” to describe Hulu’s latest 2020 release, High Infidelity.

The romantic comedy is an adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name. This time around, the series stars American-actress Zoe Kravitz, who plays Robyn “Rob” Brooks, a record store owner who’s had her fair share of bad luck when it comes to romance and tries to find lasting love in New York.

Although in the movie Rob was a male, in the Hulu series the role swaps genders. But just like the movie, Kravitz’s Rob has had at least one same-sex relationship.

A year after her fiancé Mac, played by Kingsley Ben-Adir, walked out on her, Rob tries getting back into the dating game, although she’s not quite over her ex. She meets an unassuming guy, Clyde (Jake Lacy), with whom she has a connection with. Whether she’s willing to explore it, is another question.

In the midst of it all, Rob encounters Mac by chance which results in her reeling about her inability to maintain a successful relationship. This triggers Rob to get in touch with the Top 5 men and women who broke her heart.

The cast of High Fidelity also includes David H. Holmes, who plays David. David works for Rob, but more than that, he makes part of Rob’s list of romantic heartbreaks after he came out to her. Cherise (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) is an energetic wannabe musician who can’t seem to get her music career together.

In keeping with current trends, the show’s storyline makes references to Tinder and Spotify. According to USA Today, “the series is also achingly accurate in its portrayal of the period of the young adulthood when some friends move on to marriage and kids and others still party just as hard as ever.”

Expect humour, relatability and a sharp narrative.
