Quiet! Court is in session! Well, it will be once CBS’ new courtroom drama All Rise premieres on One Magic at 20:30 tonight.
According to Indie Wire, the drama follows the “chaotic, hopeful and sometimes absurd lives of its judges, prosecutors, and public defenders as they work with bailiffs, clerks, and cops to get justice for the people of Los Angeles, all set against the backdrop of a flawed legal system.”
In particular, the show follows Lola Carmichael, played by Simone Missick, a California prosecutor’s growth to the bench. We follow her as she pushes through obstacles and challenges expectations of what a change should be while also dealing with the consequences of her actions.
Lola is an esteemed and hard-working former district attorney who has no intention of sitting back on the bench. She’s smart and compassionate and serves as both a judge and counsellor. Her naivety and intimidation into her new role work to her advantage as she is unorthodox in the approach to her profession, often challenging the status quo and in the process, leaving many judges and attorneys shocked.
She’s not afraid to sidestep the broken legal system, often going as far as getting personally involved in the private lives of public defenders and their clients whose cases she presides over.
“The series is, if anything, idealistic in its mission to shine a light on stories from diverse perspectives, exposing the general population to live in the judiciary, while highlighting problems currently plaguing America’s social climate, in order to hopefully inspire change,” writes Indie Wire.
All Rise premieres tonight at 20:30 on One Magic DStv Channel 103.
