You may not be a sports fanatic, but you may find yourself sitting through sports-based series and films for hours on end. Pop-culture about sports gives many non-sport followers the chance to experience the highs and lows that come with many games, as well as a list of characters to root for.
Such is the case with All American – a sports drama series that brings together Taye Diggs (as Coach Billy Baker) and Daniel Ezra (as Spencer James) who work together to build a brighter future for Spencer.
The series which premieres this evening at 20:30 on 1Magic, is based on professional football player Spencer Paysinger’s life on the field. All American’s Spencer gets a transfer from his high school in Crenshaw to affluent Beverly Hills High. Times reported that Paysinger also grew up in the rougher side of South Central L.A, but ended up playing for Beverly Hills High School.
Paysinger spent 7 years as a linebacker for the NFL and retired in 2017.
The series is loosely based on Paysinger’s football career and is not a carbon copy. In an interview with Times, Paysinger explained that “There are a lot of similarities within the show.
“Starting out, creating the pilot everyone will see I gave a lot of stories and memories of my past to the writers to allow them the creative freedom to go and make a compelling story. It’s not 100 percent my story but the bones of it are truly accurate."
