Grown-ish actress Yara Shahidi is Harper Bazaar’s June cover girl.

The Iranian-African-American 18-year-old opened up to Emily Baxter-Priest about how her multicultural heritage has helped her to connect with the world around her.

Yara told Harper’s Bazaar that she found her feet and voice when she portrayed Zoey on black-ish, which the Arabian magazine describes as being more than just another sitcom. “Black-ish brought African-American culture to the fore, making race central to the show’s dynamic and identity.”

Just like her character on Black-ish, Yara may be outspoken, but with good reason and good intentions, wrote the magazine. “On the topic of race, culture and myriad other pertinent matters, Yara has much to say and her words hold weight. With youth on her side, her approach is unfettered and, perhaps most importantly, unjaded. Her intention… To be a global citizen who rallies for inclusivity and advocates for all.”

Catch Yara Shahidi as she adjusts to her independence and attempts to evolve into the best version of herself on Grown-ish, Thursdays at 19:30.
