“I’ve always felt that if something is polarizing, that’s usually the stuff I like the most. If something is taking a chance and is willing to be weird, that’s my favourite thing. I know there’s somebody out there who hates it,” Andy Samberg once said.

And we totally get why!

Andy Samberg isn’t your average guy. He is writer, performer, rapper… Yes, we said rapper, and an all-around charming guy. Samberg broke into the entertainment industry when he worked on Saturday Night Live for all of seven years. But now he enjoys his reoccurring role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Here are a few facts we bet you didn’t know about the California-born actor:

The Lonely Island kicked off his career

After graduating from college, Samberg joined forces with his old college friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Together, the trio formed the Lonely Island – a sketch group that made short comedy sketches. At first, the Lonely Island relied on their own website and a local channel to showcase their sketches. Their big break came when Samberg’s former roommate got the group a job writing for Jimmy Fallon at the MTV Movie Awards. Fallon was very impressed with the Lonely Island and recommended them to Lorne Michaels. Before they knew it, they were performing on Saturday Night Live.

Samberg and Adam Sandler join forces

After spending some time on SNL, Samberg caught the eye of SNL alumni Adam Sandler. Since working together, Sandler and Samberg have been inseparable. The two performed together on numerous projects, including a number of films. In 2012, Samberg appeared on Sandler’s That’s My Boy, as Sandler’s long-last son. He also featured on Hotel Transylvania one, two and three. Sandler returned the favour by appearing on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as himself.

Samberg has been nominated several times… and won an award

Samberg’s easy-going and sometimes silly nature and characters have not gone unnoticed. In the years 2007, 2009 and 2011, Samberg was nominated “for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for "D*** in a Box," "Motherlover," "I Just Had Sex," "3-Way (The Golden Rule)," and "Jack Sparrow," with his final three nominations all in 2011.”

Although he didn’t win any of those awards, in 2014, Samberg got major recognition when Brooklyn Nine-Nine was nominated and won Best Musical or Comedy TV Series at the Golden Globe Awards. In addition to this, Samberg walked away with the award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Catch Andy Samberg on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, on Wednesdays at 19:00 only on 1 Magic, DStv Channel 103.
