Hollywood actress Folake Olowofoyeku was only 18 years old when she arrived from Nigeria to American. Since making a name for herself in the entertainment industry, Olowofoyeku has guest-starred on numerous shows, including Modern Family and Westworld. Now she’s leading in CBS’ comedy, Bob Hearts Abishola.

The sitcom is about Bob, a compression sock salesman, who suffers a heart attack. Whilst recovering, Bob meets Abishola, a Nigerian immigrant nurse, whom he develops an interest in.

“A couple of episodes will be focused on that,” Olowofoyeku told Wisconsin. Bob Hearts Abishola then takes a different turn as it explores the immigrant experience. “Specifically we explore the Yoruba Nigerian immigrant experience in America, which also correlates and is also the universal immigrant story,” Abishola said.

Touching on the similarities and differences between her and her character, Olowofoyeku said that just like Abishola, she too is a Nigerian immigrant of the Yoruba tribe. However, the difference comes in that unlike her, Abishola specifically moves to America with her son in the hope for a better future for him. “She wants him to go to an Ivy League school and become a doctor. That is the traditional Nigerian way. You’re either a doctor or an engineer or a lawyer or… a failure,” she explained.

Another difference between Olowofoyeku and her character is that unlike her, Abishola tends to be more traditional. “It’s not a bad thing,” said Olowofoyeku. “[In fact] at some point, I think I used to be more like that and I grew out of it.

“We probably have more in common than not, I think.”

Catch Folake Olowofoyeku as Abishola on Bob Hearts Abishola, Thursdays at 19:00 exclusive to One Magic, DStv Channel 103.
