Some of the relationships we entered did not work out, much like Ellis and Sunday’s love in their teens. There are those lucky few who managed to hold on to their love and have made a success of it, but our focus is on the ones that didn’t and if it’s even a good idea to try again. Can it work the second time around? So much time has passed, and their lives have evolved, and they have charted different courses for their lives. Sunday lives in another city and has her successful vegan restaurant, and Ellis has a plumbing business and is a divorcee with two beautiful daughters. As different as their lives have panned out, we can’t help but imagine how their life would have looked had there not been infidelity that eventually drove them apart. Is there a way to build after such an occurrence?
Many relationship experts agree that it is possible to move forward after infidelity, but recovering from such an ordeal will be long and hard. “It is a long road to recovery when one partner cheats,” says licensed marriage and family therapist David Klow. “Couples do and stay together after an affair, but it takes a lot of work to repair broken trust.” He says, “most couples don’t recover when one cheats, but those that do emerge stronger from having gone through the process of recovering from the affair. You could deduce that even though the love between Ellis and Sunday is real and deep, they still have their work cut out for them.
Sunday has a full life, a thriving business, and is not short of admirers. On the other hand, Ellis is a divorcee who seems to have a good co-parenting relationship with his ex but is that relationship strong enough to introduce a new partner in the mix? There is another element to consider, Ellis’ daughters and whatever reservations they may have about their father having a new woman in their life. Never mind the past hurts and potential triggers that will bring up past hurts that Sunday and Ellis may feel. This happened to Sunday and caused her to reevaluate her feelings, but Ellis keeps fighting for her with all the tenacity that we can’t help but root for them to make it.
Time is, however, on their side as they have had many years apart. Time as we know is a gentle healer that also brings perspective and wisdom to certain situations. So the answer to whether love can work a second time is yes. Granted, your hearts are in the right place and are willing to do the work that comes with healing. Love is beautiful and intricate in all its many layers. The work, however, will always have to start within, being patient with yourself, loving yourself and allowing another heart to meet yours when ready.
