Lloyd Cele

Lloyd finishes second, season 6

Lloyd finished second to Elvis Blue in the first season of Idols simulcast on Mzansi Magic, but he has possibly eclipsed the winner in terms of mainstream popularity (Elvis is big in the Afrikaans and gospel markets – and we still love him). Lloyd’s career flourished post-Idols: he won a SAMA in 2012 for Best Pop Album (for ‘One’ – he was also nominated for Best Collaboration for ‘Thando’ alongside Loyiso Bala). He joined Danny K and the aforementioned Bala to celebrate a love for Motown music and put on the stage show ‘The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye’; and he stormed the charts again in 2018 with ‘Higher’. He’s collaborated with Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta and the Soweto Gospel Choir; he won a Metro FM award; he’s recorded songs in Zulu and Afrikaans; he’s even published a book! He’s the very definition of a successful Idol. “My life has been completely changed since I was the runner up in Idols,” he says. “It’s been a whirlwind, and I have never looked back. So many amazing opportunities have come my way, and I have been sure to grab them all with both hands."
