Amanda Black

Finishes seventh in season 11

Amanda – then using her given name Amanda Antony – only finished seventh in season 11, but two years after that run she won three SAMAs for her ‘Amazulu’ album! They included Best Newcomer of the Year and Best Female Artist. She won two Metro FM awards in the same year and was nominated for a BET and a DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Award. The Eastern Cape singer moved to Johannesburg at the beginning of 2016 to pursue her music career and was soon offered a deal by Ambitiouz Entertainment. Preceded by the single ‘Amazulu’ – which currently has 5 million view on YouTube’ – the ‘Amazulu’ album was certified platinum. At the end of 2018, Anthony Hamilton announced that they were collaborating, and in 2019 she moved to the Sony Music label, releasing the single ‘Thandwa Ndim’. Under Sony, she set up her own label AfroRockstar as a joint venture and released the album ‘Power’ in 2019. With her trademark stipples of face paint – Xhosa umchokozo – and distinct Afro-future-soul flavour, she remains a powerful lady in the local music scene.
