Anele Mdoda
2019 was another banner year for Anele. She kicked it off with a new TV hosting gig on M-Net’s The Voice SA, closely followed by a trip to the Oscars for the same channel, where she interview Tyler Perry, Javier Bardem, Jennifer Hudson, Trevor Noah and many more. Between Twitter spats, Anele also raised over R1 million to build toilets at two Eastern Cape schools; she judged Miss SA; she landed on the cover of True Love and Glamour; she celebrated her 35th birthday; hosted Celebrity Game Night on E!; traveled to Tokyo with Trevor Noah and Sizwe Dhlomo; and won Best Radio Personality at the Best of Joburg awards for the second year in a row. Damn, the girl even got herself a man!
Bonang Matheba
Ah, the Queen. She actually won this category in 2018 – while hosting the damn show! As always, the question should be, what didn’t Bonang do in 2019? The last two seasons of Being Bonang aired on 1Magic. She broke the internet with sexy snaps in her lingerie line and the launch of her champagne, House of BNG. She co-produced the documentary ‘Public Figures’, was nominated for (and won!) a prestigious E! Entertainment People’s Choice Awards, and won an E! Africa Ultimate Pop Culture Icon award. She hosted the Miss SA ceremony and tackled the issue of period poverty in the ‘Activate: The Global Citizen Movement’ docu-series. She spoke, hosted and posted, and made many a magazine cover.
Nomzamo Mbatha
Ms. Mbatha also had her fair share of awards nominations and wins (the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, an E! Africa Pop Culture award, a Goddess Beauty award, a Rising Star award from Face Africa, a SAFTA, an International Women Of Power, and a Legislative Resolution from New York State Senator Kevin Parker for her work on youth development in KZN). Her philanthropic endeavours continued as she worked for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. She had her inspiring moments – the Audi advert below; adorable toddler snaps; and an empowering Women’s Day post addressed to her nieces. Among her career accomplishments were being cast in ‘Coming 2 America’ while her brand partnerships included Puma and Neutrogena. She also wrote and starred in a short film, ‘2 Grams and A Sunrise’. Oh ja: she also met Lewis Hamilton – not bad going!
Sho Madjozi
A breakout 2019, no doubt! Where to start? She bagged awards, including a BET, SAMAs, an AFRIMMA 2019, the Mzansi House and Kwaito Awards, and the VogueWorld 100 and Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 lists. There was “John Cena”, and the Ellen and Kelly Clarkson shows. She got props from the president, Tito Mboweni, Missy Elliott, Angelique KJidjo and the WWE. She performed on Colors YouTube, at the Idols SA finale, on The Voice SA, and at Cotton Fest, Miss SA and Rocking The Daisies. She addressed period poverty and sexual assault, launched a dance reality web series and collabed with Edgars. With the quality of her music undiminished, she’s set to do even more in 2020.
Somizi Mhlongo
Not to be outdone by his on-again, off-again bestie Bonang, Somizi also launched a champagne brand in association with GH Mumm. He returned to TV on Idols SA and his Mzansi Magic reality show, ‘Living the Dream with Somizi’. He enjoyed a marriage to long-time bae Mohale and won an SA Style Award for Most Stylish Couple alongside his hubby. His daughter with Palesa Madisakwane, Bahumi, was cast to play Lebo Mathosa. He spoke out against xenophobia and homophobia and addressed his own mental health issues. He cooked for Instagram and his fans. He met long-time idol Boy George and got nominated for a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award. He visited Italy and Paris. Truly living the life!
