DJ Maphorisa

When DJ Maphoria was nominated for the DStvMVCA in 2018 – he scored nominations in Song of the Year for “Midnight Starring” and for Favourite DJ – he was a well-known proponent of hip-hop and house beats for the likes of Mafikiziolo, Drake and Wizkid, Kwesta and more. “Midnight Starring” with DJ Tira, Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly was his first ride on the ‘Gqom Wave’, but in 2019, he’s all about amapiano, having worked extensively with scene-starter Kabza De Small (also nominated in this category), and the likes of Njelic, MFR Souls, Sha Sha and more.

DJ Speedsta

Given his considerable track record – he’s been landing nominations for DJ of the Year going all the way back to 2014 – it’s easy to overlook the fact that Speedsta is still just 27! The co-host of Metro FM’s Absolute Hip Hop with Lootlove, his musical output in 2019 has been hella impressive, and includes collabs with Patty Monroe, Oneida, and the below gem with Zoocci Coke Dope, Una Rams and Da L.E.S.

DJ Sumbody

It was a breakout year for Sumbody, with his track with Cassper Nyovest, Thebe and Vettis, “Monate Mpolaye”, scoring a SAMA nomination for Collaboration of the Year (they lost out to Black Coffeee and David Guetta). Since then, he’s worked with kwaito legend Mdu, Busiswa and The Lowkeys, and the co-owner of the legendary Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge has also just released his brand-new album titled ‘Ashi Nthwela’ – after his trademark phrase. The record also features Kaylow and Londie London.

Kabza De Small

When the history of amapiano is written, Kabza De Small’s name should be the first one mentioned – he featured on the debut ‘Amapiano’ compilation back in 2016! But 2019 is amapiano’s banner year, and Kabza has been front and centre, even scoring Spotify’s most streamed SA artist of the year title (Maphorisa was right behind him). This is on the back of the two acclaimed ‘Scorpion Kings’ collaborations with Maphorisa, two collabs with Samthing Soweto, and new album ‘Pretty Girls Love Amapiano’.

Prince Kaybee

Prince Kaybee won Song of the Year at the 2018 DStvMVCA for “Club Controller” – but he’d already been ruling with mega-tracks like “Charlotte” (with Lady Zamar”) and “Better Days” (with Aubrey). Since that win, he’s released a whole bunch of singles that have multi-million plays on YouTube, including “Banomoya” (with Busiswa & TNS), “Fetch Your Life” (with Msaki) and the massive “Gugulethu” with Indlovukazi, Supta and Afro Brothers, which also got a Viewers’ Choice Award nomination for Song of the Year!
