A story of two worlds intertwined by secrets, murder and betrayal.
The River

The River being one of the best telenovelas in Mzansi is produced by Tshedza Pictures production, which was announced as a 2019 International Emmy Award nominee in the Best Telenovela category.

The show has won big at 13th Annual SAFTAs. Having bagged 11 awards from their 17 nominations, The River scooped some accolades like Best Achievement in Scriptwriting - Gwydion Beynon and Phathutshedzo Makwarela; Best Actor: Telenovela for Presley Chweneyagae who plays Cobra; and Best Supporting Actor: Telenovela for Lawrence Maleka who plays Zolani. It also received Best Achievement in Directing, amongst other awards.

This flagship telenovela is a thrill-a-minute showstopper that balances the tightrope between soapie and drama. It is, quite simply a perfect story, with jaw dropping acting, and cutting-edge production value. The series is led by a solid cast made up of veteran cast members Sindi Dlathu, alongside Hlomla Dandala, Don Mlangeni and new to the industry Larona Moagi amongst others.

Set in Refilwe, Cullinan and Pretoria it sees two different, but interdependent worlds collide in exhilarating turn of events. One side of the river is populated by society’s upper crust in exquisite mansions who will go to any lengths to maintain their wealth. The other world is inhabited by the exploited “common folk” who constantly toil with little to show for it.

Dlathu plays Lindiwe Dlamini Dikana, a polished and astute mining magnate whose stilettos have squashed anyone who dared stand in the way of her wealth. Moagi plays the character of Itumeleng Mokoena, the young character from the “poor” side of town who wants to put an end to Lindiwe’s ruthless gluttony, often at the expense of her beloved community.

Courage and cunning eventually collide when they cannot put their differences aside, resulting in an endless body count. A story of ill placed love, greed, betrayal and blood bonds. The show promises to be gripping television.

M-Net SA CEO Nkateko Mabaso said “Bringing the River to Mzansi Magic will definitely be a delight to our audiences that have been missing out on this riveting drama. They will be taken on a journey of two worlds of the haves and the have nots that reflects the allure and ruthlessness of the business world, with the raw essence of township struggles”.

The Cast:

Lindiwe Dlamini Dikana – Sindi Dlathu: The enigmatic businesswoman who has sacrificed a great deal to become a success; and buries secrets with the same singlemindedness she buries bodies.

Zweli Dikana – Hlomla Dandala: Married to Lindiwe, he completes the picture-perfect power couple that’s revered and reviled in equal measure.

Zolani Dlamini – Lawrence Maleka: The adopted son of Lindiwe, who bites into forbidden fruit and later witnesses a terrible tragedy.

Thato Mokoena – Don Mlangeni: Itumeleng’s father, who meets an unexpected reckoning that haunts his daughter, committing her to a greater cause.

Itumeleng Mokoena– Larona Moagi: The feisty young rebel who refuses to be silenced and roll over when her family and community become casualties of greed and excess.
