He is a 90’s RnB hit-maker whose name can still elicit a reaction from women across the globe. It is just a few days before his first ever show in Mzansi and if his seven albums are anything to go by, the Sandton Convention Centre is going to be ablaze on July 31st.
An Early Start
Donell Jones is an old school multi-talented RnB star from Illinois, Chicago. A gang related incident led him on the musical path. His start came quite early in his life and had the gospel influence from his mother; who gave him the greenlight to pursue his talent with an electric guitar at the age of 14. It was smooth sailing from there.
The Big Break
His talent caught the eye of music producer Eddie F., who signed him and his band Porscha to LaFace Records in 1993. Depsite things not working out when the group disbanded, Donell continued to perfect his craft as a song-writer and producer, penning music for big names in the scene like the all-girl group 702 and Usher.
Breakout Success
The positive critical reception from these hits gave him the go-ahead to release his debut album, My Heart, in 1996. His cover of Stevie Wonders’ song; “Knocks Me Off My Feet,” gave him a huge following that would lay the foundation for his long run as a solo artist.
His second album, “Where I Wanna Be”, which featured the late Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopez (TLC) on the track ‘U Know What’s Up’, released in 1999 and went platinum cementing his status as a class-act in the RnB circles.
The successes of his following releases erased any doubt that he was perhaps a ‘one-album-wonder’; and his mastery to write music that would stand the test of time. It was further proof that Donell Jones is really a star.
Going Strong
After twenty-years in the business and with no signs of slowing down, Donell Jones is coming to our shores just ahead of Women’s Month. If timeless RnB sounds from a smooth RnB heart throb are your beat, then be sure to get your tickets for this One Intimate Night. It is not one to be missed.
