Our guest judge at Durban Idols auditions, gospel singer Dr Tumi, is more than a ‘spiritual doctor’ – he’s an actual doctor who’s been on the Covid–19 frontlines.

South African gospel singer, producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist Dr Tumi (real name Tumišang Makweya) was born and bred in Seshego, Limpopo, and could be described as a ‘spiritual music doctor’. But there’s more to his title “Dr” than meets the eye: Dr Tumi earned his title after spending six years studying medicine at the Medical University of Southern Africa.

And he’s been using this training during lockdown, volunteering at Tembisa Hospital's specialised Covid-19 unit! He stepped away for a day to officiate idols SA Durban auditions.

He’s had some experience on reality singing shows. He performed with the Idols SA Top 10 last season:

And he got his start in 2003 when he was involved in Coca-Cola Popstars. He made it to the Top 20 and was called back for extra training, affording him an opportunity to receive coaching from music greats like Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbuli, Thembi Seete and Blondie Makhene.

Dr Tumi’s first solo album,’ Heart of a King’, garnered him Best R&B Gospel Award at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards in 2012 (he was nominated in four categories). Armed with virtuoso musical abilities, Dr Tumi has also shown over the years a ‘no fear' attitude towards challenges, including the current pandemic.

In 2008, Dr Tumi, sang at TD Jakes’ MegaFest held at the Nasrec Expo Centre, where he shared the stage with the likes of Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, Joyous Celebration, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Benjamin Dube, Vuyo Mokoena, Jabu Hlongwane and other members of the Joyous Celebration.
Dr Tumi uses his twin professions – music and medicine – to advance lives of the people.

“Music and medicine are rooted in improving people’s lives,” he says. “However, ministering through song has the potential to go even beyond the natural and reach deep inside.”

He’s a good doctor, a great guy, and a wonderful addition to the Idols SA panel!
