With Women’s Month coming to an end, there’s no better time to share #HomeGround’s women crushes who kill it in their respective sporting codes.

Bongiwe Msomi

As captain of the Spar Proteas, South Africa’s netball team, Msomi has proven herself time and time again.

She guided the team to its first semi-final of the Netball World Cup since 1995. “It is an immense achievement which showcases the hard work that we have invested in this team,” she wrote on news website, IOL ahead of the match.

The Spar Proteas, however, notched a fourth place overall in the tournament after losing their match against Australia.

Gerda Steyn

During this year’s Comrades Marathon up-run, Steyn smashed the women’s record by running it in the fastest time of 5:58:53. It was also the fourth fastest women’s Comrades time overall.

After winning the 2018 and 2019 Two Oceans Marathons, she was clear that her goal was to win the prestigious, and daunting, Comrades Marathon. And Steyn triumphed in style.

Banyana Banyana

In November last year, South Africa’s national women’s soccer team, affectionately dubbed Banyana Banyana (The Girls), qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time and stamped their name in the history books by virtue of that achievement.

While they got knocked out in the group stages, we’re proud they got to compete against the world’s best. And now they’ve set their sights on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Head coach Desiree Ellis wants to see Banyana Banyana flying the flag even higher in Tokyo.

“As a coach you always want to see the team improving all the time, I am no different. I have been to the Olympic Games and I loved what I saw there – similar to the World Cup but on a different scale, so definitely we intend to guide the team to qualification at this prestigious tournament,” she says.
