The new docu-reality series Utatakho launches on Tuesday, 7 July 2015 at 19:30 on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161). Hosted by Zola (Bonginkosi Dlamini), whose loved by his fans, the series tackles the difficult but relevant South African issue of absent fathers.

The new production marks a departure for Mzansi Magic who are well known for their celeb and lifestyle driven reality series. Utatakho is different.  It’s a docu-reality series, centered on ordinary people who see the show as a helpful vehicle that can assist them to clarify a vital personal relationship.  Whilst it’s also expected to generate dialogue and debate, it is fundamentally about addressing a social concern that many across this country deal with every day. For this reason, Mzansi Magic encourages audiences using social media platforms to voice their opinions, to do so with tact and care.

Speaking ahead of the show’s launch, M-Net Director for Local Interest Nkateko Mabaso says that Mzansi Magic is very aware that the subject matter being dealt with is sensitive and have been preparing the program content accordingly.

“Since we generated the idea for the show, it has been extensively researched to ensure that as a law abiding broadcaster who has the welfare of participants firmly in mind, we are making informed choices with regards to what is screened. We’re focusing on adult children, over the age of 18, who are looking for answers about their paternity.”

He goes on to say, “The show is driven fully by the participants and we follow their stories. Sometimes it leads to DNA testing, sometimes it delivers off-camera reconciliations  and at times it’s just a step forward in a long journey for those involved. We respect their emotions, and their decisions. It is their courage to appear on TV, whether as mother, father or child, that gives life to this important social discussion. And given the positive response Utatakho has already received, it is clear the need to explore this issue is well supported.”

Ensuring that the series is not only informative viewing but also responsibly executed, series producers Connect TV are working closely with clinical psychologist Phyllis Ndlovu (Founder of Kisima Psychological Services) to ensure that participants are provided with the necessary support during this process, including instances where DNA testing is done.

DNA testing for the show will be processed courtesy of Durban based and internationally affiliated lab, DNA Test.
