Nkululeko Mkhize had no idea that his melodious voice would actually work in his favour and win over the love of his life, Palesa.

The couple met way back in 2007. Nkululeko was a member of a certain gospel choir in their community. Palesa’s family owned a tailor-making business and it so happened that Nkululeko’s choir came for fittings.

Palesa’s aunt asked the choir to sing for them and while the choir belted in song, the aunt asked a shy Nkululeko to step forward and do a solo piece. Nkululeko chuckled, as he recalls how Palesa’s aunt had a soft spot for him.

It so happened that Palesa and her cousin also loved music, so her aunt asked the choir if they could join and luckily they were granted membership. They would attend the daily practise and one day, as they were all walking back to their respective homes after  practice, Nkulukelo boldy told Palesa that she would be the woman he spend the rest of his life with.

Challenges:

There was a time when Nkululeko was unemployed and Palesa became the breadwinner. Palesa recalls it was a difficult time. She said Nkululeko would isolate himself and communication lines broke down. She’s grateful for their family’s support during this time.

How he proposed:

It was in 2009, around the Easter holidays and Nkululeko had just returned home from the big city. He told her he was going to send his uncles to her family and asked her what she thought about the idea of them getting married. Palesa thought he was joking. A few months later, he called her and asked if her family was ready to welcome his uncles, and indeed his uncles visited Palesa’s family for lobola negotiations.
