It’s one of the most distinctive and celebrated music genres in South Africa – blasting from people’s cars and setting the scene as the music score in some of the top shows on television.

That’s right, we’re talking about Maskandi, and Mzansi Magic Music is delving into the genre and its leading artists with an original new show. Yash’ingoma premieres on 15 January 2023 on DStv Channel 321, and it features in-depth interviews with and incredible performances from the genre’s biggest names, as well as up-and-comers.

Hosted by Ukhozi FM’s Khathide Ngobe and Amaponi musician and TV presenter Ntombi Ngcobo Mzolo, the 10-episode show is as nostalgic and celebratory as it is cutting-edge and modern.

Yash’ingoma is an exciting new addition to our Mzansi Magic Music line-up for various reasons. Chief among them is that it shines a spotlight on a genre that’s much-loved in the country, but that has hardly been profiled in this manner. A programme like this goes beyond the music – it shows us the artists behind it and their rich, varied stories. We hope our viewers find it engaging and enlightening,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.

Some of the guests who will be featured on the show include the legendary Ihhashi Elimhlophe – and, with host Ngcobo Mzolo being his daughter, it will make for an interesting episode to see them step into an interviewer-interviewee dynamic.

More guests who will open up on the show as well as perform include Imfez’Emnyama, Sminofu and Muntuyenziwa.

Each episode of Yash’ingoma sees artists share their life stories and their journey with music and, in particular, Maskandi. The musicians kick off the show with an exciting performance, setting the tone for the hour to come, before sitting down for a fascinating interview and a countdown of their personal favourite Maskandi songs.

But Yash’ingoma isn’t only about shining a light on those who have made it – artists will also introduce their favourite up-and-coming performers, who will also get the chance to sing their music in-studio. This is not your standard music show – it also passes the baton to those in the running to be Maskandi’s next big names.

Don’t miss Yash’ingoma, a programme that shows Maskandi with the nuance it deserves, premiering on Mzansi Magic Music (DStv Channel 321) on Sunday 15 January 2023.
