What an intro!
Within minutes of Bunut's arrival, he caused a brawl at Corner House and refused to pay for his drinks. We were shooked to find out that this young man called Buntu, was in fact Schumacher's younger brother.
But what's the story there? Why did he not embrace his brother's arrival?
Here's a little background info on Bunto Toto:
Buntu Toto is a young Xhosa man who grew up in rural Eastern Cape. He is Schumacher’s younger brother and has not seen his brother since he was 8 years old. He only knows Schumacher through his real name – Lumko. He thought Schumacher was dead until he saw a clip of him on YouTube.
A troubled past
Buntu grew up idolising his big brother, followed him everywhere. He was devastated when Schumacher ran away from home and his life deteriorated as his father turned the abuse on to Buntu. Buntu grew up in a household where men were macho, they tackled every problem with anger and violence and they treated women like underlings only good for serving men. So, as a teenager he acted out this toxic masculinity in the streets and got caught up in all kinds of trouble and crime.
Where's he been all this time?
He has recently come from initiation. He went a little later because he was in and out of jail for all kinds of petty crime. Eventually he ended up convicted for five years for housebreaking. He only spent three years inside. Now that has finally gone through ulwaluko and has come back a man, he’s even more problematic. He is a chauvinist, a homophobe and a misogynist. He has a violent streak and thinks he has to solve everything with a fist and drinks like a fish. We saw this for ourselves yesterday!
What is he hoping for?
Buntu believed that his life was going to improve for the better once reunited with his brother, but it’s tough as his presence will force Schumacher to face the past he has been running away from.
Will Schumacher be ready to face the toxicity that he was raised in? If yesterday is anything to go by, we think not!
Buntu Toto, played by Phila Madlingozi made his debut on The Queen yesterday, and we can't wait to see what he has in store for us.
