Stop everything! Grammy award-winning super choir, Soweto Gospel Choir, is all set for what looks to be a memorable performance on the Idols SA live stage, this Sunday.

With this week’s theme being ‘Choir Inspirational’ and ‘Old Made New’, it was only right that we tap the best in the biz, for our Top 5 Reveal. The choir, which has recorded and performed with some of the world’s greatest musicians including Bono and U2, Queen, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Diana Ross, Johnny Clegg and Angelique Kidjo, is set to join our talent for a night of undiluted entertainment and nail-biting Eliminations.

The choir’s concert repertoire, which includes a mix of African gospel, South African traditional and international classics, peppered with much dancing and drumming, is sure to go down a treat.

Since its formation in 2002, Soweto Gospel Choir has arguably received more accolades than any other choir in the world. It has won four Grammys (two of their own, plus two feature/collabo Grammys), an Emmy Award for its collaboration with Bono and U2, as well as an Academy Award nomination for its recording with Peter Gabriel on the Disney Pixar film ‘Wall E’. Added to this are several African Awards including three South African Music Awards and an inaugural Trumpet Africa Gospel Music Award.

Africa's pride

The Choir has travelled throughout the world over the past 15 years, with concerts at Carnegie Hall, London Festival Hall and the Sydney Opera House, to name a few. They’ve been special guests at the MTV Africa Music Awards and the AFRIMA (All Africa Awards) and have toured many countries in Africa including Botswana, Nigeria, Ghana and Ethiopia.

With its live performances, Soweto Gospel Choir has brought joy to audiences all over the world. The choir has performed for and celebrated with world leaders and renowned celebrities including Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the British Royal family, President Obama, President Clinton and Oprah.
