The contestants must show off chops as pairs on this week’s episode. How will their duets play out?

Saturday’s episode of Idols SA will be turning the heat up as the contestants continue to fight for their place in the next round of the singing competition. With a number of hopefuls now back at home following a massive wave of dismissals at last Saturday’s Theatre Week, the stakes are high.

This time, the contestants will be supplied with a selection of songs to perform as pairs.

Performed as duets, each song will contain parts for both contestants to sing and prove their vocal pipes. Unlike features, in which an artist can lay down a guest verse or even harmonise a chorus, are characterised by their requirements of complete participation from both artists.

Think of Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross on ‘Endless Love’. Both artists have the same amount of time in the duration of the song, and both harmonise their voices in the bridge and chorus of the song.

Idols SA season 19 hopefuls will be expected to deliver a similar type of performances by matching each other’s energies, mastering their chemistry and elevating the song without competing without sounding like they are competing with each other.

Other famous duets in the history of pop include; Brandy and Monica on ‘The Boy is Mine’, Kenny Latimore and Tamia’s ‘Spend My Life with You’, Nelly and Kelly ‘Dilemma’, usher and Alice Keys, ‘My Boo’, Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks ‘No Air,

Idols SA alumni Mariechan and Shekhinah killed it on ‘Different’, Lloyiso and Langa Mavuso, ‘Inhliziyo’. Fans would also remember Zola and former Idols SA judge , Unathi ’s ‘Sana Lwami’, as well as Rihanna and MikkiyEcco ‘Stay’.

When one thinks of these great songs, both artists shone equally. Instead of competing for the spotlight, each artist brought their own flavour and melted it skilfully with their collaborator in a way that created collaborative magic.

How will the pairs do?

Idols SA airs every Saturday at 18:00 on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161), thereafter on Mzansi Wethu at 19:30.
