A seriously mixed bag – Idols SA

News
19 October 2022
Versatility: that’s what the Idols have to display this Sunday with an assortment of songs – New School Mzansi hits, and some tunes that should have been done better by Wooden Mic auditionees.

How it should have been done:

Mpilwenhle: Labrinth – Jealous

Firstly: we cannot wait for the Idols SA band and banking vocalists to get stuck in here. Secondly: Mpilo and the other Idols are gonna shine! This track is coming up on a mere 400 million and has a big vocal, but there’s not much else happening; Mpilo is basically alone and has to be on top form.

Thapelo: Vusi Nova – Ndikuthandile

Wow: if there was ever a song in Thapelo’s wheelhouse, it’s this (that said, we’re pretty sure this dude could nail anything!). BIG ballad is an understatement: this is HUGE – and a perfect wedding track. If you didn’t wanna marry Thapelo before this, you sure will afterwards.

Nozi: Beyoncé – Listen

Noz: so, you really want to tackle Beyoncé? And not just one of her throwaway pop tracks, but a massive one? You go gurl! Jirre: this song could only be bigger if it featured an appearance by Jamie Foxx (oh, eish: there he is in the video!)

Zee: Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko – Stay

Another brave choice: Rihanna tracks don’t come much more successful than this. And we’d leave that Mikky Ekko feature to the backing vocalists – it’s wow! Unfortunately, it’s also central to the track – what have you done, Zee! Like everything else, we’re sure you’ll walk this, but good luck, lady.

Ty Loner: John Legend – You & I (Nobody in the World)

Ty Loner needs to show off his skills here – this is an immense ask from John Legend. It goes up, down, emotive, gentle – a proper challenge. There’s a level of sincerity here that you have to sell.

New School Mzansi hits:

Mpilwenhle: Kabza De Small ft. Msaki – Khusela

What a tune. Amapiano meets traditional Mzansi vibes. Msaki’s vocal is a joy: it’s there to serve the groove, but it’s also as accomplished as they come. Mpilo: we can’t wait wena!

Thapelo: Lloyiso – Seasons

You may remember Lloyiso from season 11 – he made Top 5. Super emotive song, delivered in a distinctive style. How will Thapelo tackle this monster (oh: Lloy really shows off his range at the end).

Nozi: Mvzzle ft. Zammy – Thando

An amapiano track that’s powered by Zammy’s vocal, this might not be the ratchet number Somizi sought last week. Nozi will need to be kleva.

Zee: Pabi Cooper – MAMA

Our guest artist from a couple of weeks back, Pabi is back, this time with a relatively new track performed by Zee. Talk about gentle, polite amapiano – until that bass kicks in. You’ve got those breaks, Zee – better make ‘em count.

Ty Loner: Musa Keys and Loui – Selema (Po Po)

Don’t forget the Po Po… So, Ty Loner must go choose the most vocally complex amapiano track, but it’s one that suits his vibe 100%, and with his performance prowess, watch out.
