A judge catch-up – Idols SA

A look at what the Idols SA judges have been up to since last season!
Somizi struts – Idols season 17

It’s literally impossible to keep up with Somizi – a Google news search will have you scrolling for days. There is, of course, the continued speculation about his marriage to Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo (which, quite frankly, is none of our business), but on the lighter side, he’s left fand LOLing with his tennis skills.

He’s spoken out about racism and classism in the LGBTQIA+ community, supported black businesses, collaborated on a sneaker with Bathu, and scored a SAFTA nom for Somizi & Mohale: The Union. His cookbook ‘Dinner at Somizi's: I Am Not A Chef’, released shortly after last season, was a number one seller.

He left a waitress in Melville a R600 tip on a meal bill that didn’t even total R400, and continued his beautiful friendship with bestie (and musical collaborator) Vusi Nova. He even offered a stranger roadside assistance!

He dressed as a schoolboy for Youth Day (which had some fans labelling him ‘tone deaf’):

And his look for the photoshoot for the new season of Idols is PEAK Somgaga!

It’s safe to say that Somizi is a media darling – and his antics on Idols this season will keep him in the news!

Unathi hasn’t exactly been quiet either. While continuing her midday show on Kaya FM, she’s guested on Sphectacula and DJ Naves new podcast; spoken out against bullying; joined the Fattis and Monis ‘Freedom Party’ (a cook-off on which she is a judge); became the face of the global fashion brand MaXhosa; and shared her fitness journey – and advice – on her Instagram.

She’s also back in the music biz! She collaborated with the above-mentioned Sphectacula and DJ Naves and Thebe on the track ‘Okokoko’ – and the video scored a SAMA nomination!

Randall is not really the publicity-seeking kind, but he did make an appearance on The Money Show with Bruce Whitfield on 702, where he said profoundly Randall things like, ‘How much is enough?... I don’t want to work forever,’ ‘I never look in the rear-view mirror, except when I’m driving,’ and ‘Look at opportunities when things are bad.’

He’s also kept his IGTV relatively busy, chatting about everything from money to classic albums to wine.

Idols SA is screened exclusively on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) on Sundays at 17:30 (17:00 From Live Shows). It will also be available on DStv Catch Up once the show has aired.
