The don’ts of meeting your partner’s family – Married at First Sight Mzansi

News22 September 2025
Just don’t.🙅🏽‍♀️
Black couple at table

We’ve seen our couples meet their partners’ family and friends with very different outcomes. Some walked away with hugs and blessings, while others left with tension piling up. To help you avoid the drama, here are don’ts to keep in mind when it’s your turn.

Don’t overshare 😭

Not every family needs to know your entire relationship history on day one. Remember when Palesa spilled the tea about Tshepo calling her ugly? It was painful to watch. Or when Portia mentioned that Tshepo was not her type? She came across as shallow and was immediately interrogated by his friends.

Don’t argue with your partner 🤬

Save the disagreements for later, no one wants to see conflict during the first meeting. Nkululeko and Makoto made things rather awkward when their friends had to play therapists on their first meeting. Bringing your problems to the table is a huge no.

Don’t get distracted 🤳

Give the experience your full attention, wrap up work obligations, put your phone down, and connect in the moment. It may come across as disinterest or disrespect if you seem indifferent.

Don’t force a connection 💡

Let bonds form naturally, forcing intimacy can feel fake or awkward. Bongani was able to win Portia’s brother over by being authentic. He didn’t say all the perfect things, just the real things. Connection takes time, let it play out.

Don’t take it too seriously 🙂

Keep conversations light and avoid touchy topics like religion, politics, or past relationships. It may turn sour when differences in opinions cause conflict at the table. If it comes up, tread carefully.

Meeting family and friends can either strengthen your bond or expose cracks. As we’ve seen this season, it can make or break it all.  Don’t miss this week’s episodes as the couples head out on their final dates before Decision Day. Who will say yes, and who will walk away?
