Hosted by Lloyd Cele, Ubizo focuses on helping individuals and families find answers to problems related to relationships, work, and other aspects of life by unblocking limiting potentials through spiritual consultations.
Two people can do the same work but channel the spiritual world in different ways. While Lloyd on the show does it in one particular way, a sangoma practices in their own way as well. The best part is that it all leads to the same thing, connecting and finding answers from departed loved ones.
Bones vs notebooks
Mediums communicate and channel spirits in multiple ways. Some choose not to use tools, while others use candles, notebooks, crystals, flowers, tarot cards, or Ouija boards. Lloyd often uses a whiteboard and artefacts: a great idea for presenting messages. A sangoma however uses bones that look unique and hold different meanings to connect and deliver messages. Other items could include shells and even dice.
Casual vs cloths
Attire is another difference between these two worlds. Sangomas dress in traditional cloths that represent their ancestors. They also wear beads around their hands and ankles. Hollywood loves draping mediums in shawls and scarves, but they can practise in casual clothes, just like we see Lloyd do.
Sacred place vs freedom of movement
Sangomas hold their consultations in a sacred place called an indumba, which is a dedicated hut or shrine where they can connect with their ancestors. This location is favoured, because it is believed to be where ancestors reside and so makes communication a breeze. A medium will happily channel spirits from a place that feels safe for you. Some may work in their own spaces but many of them accommodate your needs and meet you where you are. Often in Lloyd’s case, his prefererence is for his clients to meet him at his place for consultations.
The differences speak to how complex the spiritual world is; but at the end of it all, the results are the same: you get to connect with the other world and find healing.
