In this final recap of season 1 of The Request, a moving documentary series on Mzansi Magic, we explore the challenging lives of e-hailing drivers who face serious dangers while trying to earn a living.
This recap focuses on part 2, highlighting the chilling, real-life experiences of these drivers as they navigate the busy and often dangerous streets of South Africa.
Mnikelo Ndabankulu
Ndabankulu had a frightening experience one night when he accepted a ride request from three teenagers. What seemed like a normal fare turned into a nightmare when the teens attacked him in an attempt to steal his car. Luckily, none of them could drive, which allowed Mnikelo a chance to escape.
Sibusiso Ncube
Sibusiso Ncube has had a tough time as an e-hailing driver, having been hijacked four times. The fourth incident was particularly horrifying. He was held at gunpoint by three armed men who moved him around Durban, causing deep fear. The physical effects of that night remain, and he now deals with anxiety and worries about whether he can continue working safely in this risky job.
Mr Biyela
With many years in the e-hailing business, Mr Biyela has faced numerous challenges. His toughest test came when he picked up three men who later pulled a gun on him and demanded that he obey them. Despite trying to fight back, they overpowered him and held him captive for what felt like an eternity.
Kwazi Gumede
Kwazi Gumede struggled with poverty and once dreamed of a better life when he bought a car on credit, believing it would help him support his family. Unfortunately, his dreams were shattered when he was hijacked, and his car was later found stripped of its parts. This theft had serious financial consequences for him, leaving him overwhelmed and uncertain about his future.
Each story highlights the harsh realities faced by e-hailing drivers. Through their powerful experiences, the documentary showcases their bravery and determination as they fight against challenges to create a better life.
