Ambition versus tradition
Mpondoland

This December, Mzansi Magic’s new and first ever Mpondo drama, Mpondoland, is joining the channel’s Sunday night line-up, showcasing some of the best homegrown talent to grace Mzansi screens.

At the heart of the Mpondoland story is Mkhondwana, played by SAFTA-nominated Thembekile Komani, who must choose between pursuing his personal ambition and following tradition. On the opposite side is Pele-Pele (Tina Jaxa), a ruthless outsider who threatens to disrupt the peace in Mkhondwana’s sacred homeland, KwaKhonjwayo.

Joining them is a combination of an ensemble cast and rising Mzansi stars including Luzuko Nkqeto (Gqeberha: The Empire, Inimba), Siziphiwe Maqubela (Gqeberha: The Empire), Nkosinathi Emmanuel Gweva (Inimba), Anele Matoti (Gqeberha: The Empire), Ayanda Makayi, Esihle Ndleleni, and many more.

According to Mpondoland co-executive producer Chumisa Cosa, casting for the show was about finding performers who could bring authenticity to the story and fully embody the characters.

“We are happy to have been able to cast a combination of seasoned and new faces who are a representative of the level of talent that Mzansi has to offer,” says Chumisa . "We are confident that their performances will make this an unforgettable series to watch."

Siziphiwe Maqubela, one of the lead characters believes that the heartbeat of Africa runs through this story. “The story means so much to me because I play a woman who is constantly fighting for her family and village. It’s a reminder of how strong women are. It felt personal.”

For authentic local storytelling with powerful and in-depth performances, tune in to Mpondoland premiering on Sunday 7 December at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).
