When someone steps up to the Idols judges to perform their heart out, they often believe they have the best voice in the land. Few people ever dare to take that leap of faith only to embarrass themselves as they bleat like a goat instead of singing like a canary. However sometimes, no matter how hard they try and how much they believe in themselves, some folks just don't cut it!Â
And the biggest culprit for contestants falling flat on their face? Song choice! The selection of the right song to compliment your vocals is just as important as making it to the audition itself! So to help those hopeful few who still have dreams of conquering Idols SA, we've put together some of the most butchered audition songs that you should totally stay away from if you're voice isn't made of honey!
Beyoncé - Listen
All hail Queen B! Her discography is longer than an Idols audition line and she has hundred of incredible ballads to choose from but Listen in particular is a wooden mic favourite. It's safe to say it's the one song butchered more than a steak at Salt Bae's restaurant!
Mariah Carey - Without You
"Without You" could easily be the top contender for most butchered song in the world, not just South Africa! Mariah's powerful vocals make it phenomenally difficult to be on par with the star plus everyone grew up listening to her. You don't want to mess with people's happy memories now do you?
Vusi Nova - Ngikuthandile
We understand the desire to impress the judges, especially if there's a celebrity guest judge before you. But it's probably better to stay away from their timeless hit song just in case you end up embarrassing us in front of visitors! 🙆
Whitney Houston - Greatest Love of All
Whitney Houston's vocals are simply unmatched. Often imitated but never duplicated and rightfully so. Complex notes and incredible range make her music solely best tackled by the professionals.
Amanda Black - Amazulu
You love local. We love local. Everyone loves a local hit song. No one however likes the romantic ballads butchered! Amanda Black captured the nation's hearts back in Season 11 and has been a national treasure ever since. As such it only makes sense that her sweet serenades be handled with the utmost care!
