Adele’s ballade ‘Someone Like You’ tells us that “sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”. We’re not sure what Adele was feeling when she wrote that but Mzansi Magic’s reality show Beng’semathandweni has proven umjolo is not a game.
With eleven episodes having aired, the reality show has taken us inside the secrets and struggles that lead to broken relationships. Since “I love you” and Valentine’s Day are around the corner, here are five tips for how to score yourself red roses and cards.
Communication
Being open and honest is key. You must share all the details with your partner even those you think mean nothing. Let your partner know what’s on your mind, how they make you feel, and what you are scared of or worried about.
Trust
To want to stay in a relationship you must be able to trust your partner. Trust includes being free and able to let your hair down knowing someone has your back. It’s tricky, as trust can be easily broken and difficult to amend.
Compromise
Don’t be self-centred or always expect to have your way. Understand that relationships require give-and-take for balance. Be willing to adapt and find middle ground in things you don’t agree with. We are not saying lose your beliefs and values, but don’t sweat the little things. It’s okay to have a burger when you wants pizza, tomorrow you can choose again.
Love
Without love, there is no relationship. It’s the foundation. You have to show and confess it to your partner. The feeling of being loved will create a sense of belonging and fulfilment. Love gives birth to a strong foundation.
Keep the romance alive
No matter how long you have been together, never get used to each other to the point where you neglect your relationship. Continue to surprise each other, express affection, and make an effort to keep the spark alive. By now you know what your partner likes. Show it.
