Every family has secrets, and most, if not all of them, are swept underneath the carpet.
However, not every family secret can remain hidden: In many households, men choose silence over vulnerability, refusing to disclose their past relationships to their spouses. But secrets always have a way of resurfacing, and when they do, they wreak havoc on the present. Qutu is a mirror held up to society – it boldly explores the chaos families face when the shadows of the past resurface in the present. It also shows that the pursuit of truth of often comes at a price and what one believes will bring freedom may instead result in emotional damage.
At the heart of the story is Ray, a young man raised by his mother, Frida, in abject poverty in their rural village. After his mother is diagnosed with stage four cancer, Ray is forced to look for his father, Mziwande who he has never known or met. Mziwande left for the city, promising to return and improve their lives but never returned. Instead, he met another woman and settled with her, unaware that he had left Frida carrying an unborn child.
What will happen when Ray’s search for the truth collides with Frida’s attempt to hide the truth she has spent years trying to bury?
