On May 25, 1963, the then Organisation of African Unity (OAU now the African Union) was created. Africa Day was created by then-Prime Minister of Ghana, the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah to acknowledge the success of the African Union and to celebrate Africa’s cultural identity and common heritage.

Most of the countries that gained independence from European colonisers around the time came together and marked their liberation and unity by celebrating Africa Day the same day the OAU was created. Since then, the day is widely commemorated by most of the African countries.

According to the African Union, this year’s theme revolves around nutrition and strengthening resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent.

Here are three interesting facts about Africa Day:

  • Africa Day was formed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after 30 countries signed the OAU charter. Today there are 54 member states.
  • The day is commemorated by member states of the African Union except Morocco.
  • Africa Day is observed as a public holiday only in Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Chad, Comoros, Equatorial Guineas, Lesotho, Liberia and Mauritania.
