Singer and songwriter Janet Otieno shares her story.

Janet Otieno was born in Kisumu, Kenya, and is the second oldest of six siblings. She was raised in a Christian home and this upbringing became the foundation of her musical journey by making her realise the passion she had to serve God through music.

Otieno’s musical journey began after she joined the church choir. She soon became the lead singer and guided the congregation through powerful praise and worship sessions with her magnificent voice. After the Sunday church service, Otieno would often retreat to the solitude of her home and there she would write her own songs.

Her music and career

Otieno is versatile in her style of music and has had the privilege of sharing platforms with renowned Kenyan and international artists. In May 2013, Otieno says God brought Christina Shusho, a renowned gospel artist from Tanzania to her. They recorded a song known as ‘Napokea Kwako which became a major hit in East and Central Africa and Otieno’s launching pad in the gospel industry. The song has currently garnered more than 4 million views on YouTube.

Later on, Otieno proceeded as a solo artist and recorded other songs such as ‘Uniongoze’, ‘Ni Wewe’, ‘Mtafute’, ‘Heshima’, ‘Tembea Nami’, ‘Roho Wako Nisamehe’ featuring Rigan Sarkozi and many more. These are songs have inspired many and continue to minister to Christians from all walks of life.

Recognition and awards

Through the success of her songs, Otieno has received various nominations and won various accolades, with 2014 being a good year for her. Here are some of the awards she won:

  • 2014 Mwafaka Awards Collabo of the Year (Napokea Kwako)
  • 2014 Xtreeme Awards Female Artist of the Year
  • 2014 Mwafaka Awards Female Artist of the Year

Between 2015 and 2016 she was nominated for the Groove Awards Female Artist of the Year, Groove Awards Collabo of the Year, Groove Awards Song of the Year and Groove Awards Video of the Year.

Otieno is a happily married mother of three. She loves singing, cooking and traveling. Her mantra in her life and music ministry is: “In everything I do may God receive all the glory.”
