Come January 2023, the festive season will be on its way out – but that doesn’t mean the new year will be off to a slow start.
Wakaliwood

On 2 January, Maisha Magic Movies will usher in 2023 with a roundhouse kick when it premieres the Wakaliwood special movie collection for a month of delightful, action-packed movie magic – the ultimate action attraction.

The brainchild of Isaac Nabwana’s Ramon Pictures, Wakaliwood is home to modern action films from Uganda, and Maisha Magic Movies will feature them front and centre with films screening until 30 January. Wakaliwood broadcasts will be on Mondays to Saturdays at 9.30 pm.

Maisha Magic Movies Channel Head Barbara Kambogi says: “We’re pleased to have Wakaliwood as a prominent feature on the channel for this special festival. It’s a game-changing genre that’s uplifted Ugandan cinema and contributed positively towards the growth and diversification of African cinema as a whole.”

She concludes: “On the Maisha Magic Movies front, we have made a lot of progress in serving viewers the best films in the East African region while also growing and promoting the industry. We remain committed to our work and to African films, particularly in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.”

Among the Wakaliwood films, viewers can enjoy in January is the seminal modern classic Who Killed Captain Alex? about a captain sent on an anti-mafia mission by the president, only to get killed in the process. His brother decides to investigate and avenge his death. The critically acclaimed audience favourite is considered Uganda’s first action film, and a Wakaliwood highlight.

While the full list of films to expect is wide-ranging and impressive, some other titles to enjoy include Undercover Cop, Kung Fu Brothers, Bruce U, Boda Boda Killer, Million Dollar Kid, and Bad Black.

Don’t forget to tune in to Maisha Magic Movies (DStv channel 141 and GOtv Value channel 15 in Uganda and 311 in Kenya) from 2 January until 30 January 2023 for a film fest like no other.
Welcome to Wakaliwood, where there’s something for everyone, whether you like your action with a serving of comedy or a side of horror.
