𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟭 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. Emergency medical crews are coming under attack while on duty across the country. In the Western Cape alone, more than 40 incidents of violence directed at paramedics were recorded last year. In a bid to protect paramedics, so-called red zones were declared in the province in 2016: areas that paramedics dare not enter without a police escort. But, even with additional security, their safety is not guaranteed as the red zones become increasingly dangerous. For these paramedics, putting their lives on the line to save critically ill or injured patients is all part of a day’s work. This Sunday, we join these unsung heroes as they enter the dark side of the city on a busy Friday night to reach their patients. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟯 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. Mpho and Flenters are unusual companions. One is an orphaned rhino calf and the other a sheep with a little attitude. At a secret location in the bush, Mpho is just one of a crash of orphaned rhino calves saved from certain death by a non-profit rhino orphanage. Many of them lost their mothers to poaching and, in the wild, young rhino are completely incapable of caring for themselves. They will either fall prey to predators or eat dirt to survive. At this orphanage, the budding friendship between Mpho and Flenters is getting all the attention. Staff at the orphanage hope that, with Flenters’ help, Mpho might one day return to the wild. For the families of Tamia Botha in the Western Cape and Bokgabo Poo in Gauteng there has been no closure: the police haven’t arrested their killers. In Bokgabo’s case, the man last seen with her was acquitted in the Pretoria High Court last month. Tamia’s killer remains at large. In the most recent crime statistics, it was revealed that 293 children were murdered between April and June this year. That’s at least three children murdered every day. And if crime weren’t enough of a problem, gross service delivery failures have left this famed stopover for tourists and adventurers in the Northern Cape in crisis. The Eye of Kuruman, a natural spring with 20 million litres of crystal-clear water bubbling to the surface every day, was once known as the Oasis of the Kalahari. But pollution from a defunct sewerage system and poor bylaw enforcement is seeing this pristine life-source wasted.
