In January this year, we reported on the sinister criminal network that had taken root at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape. Our story exposed the extent of the rot, including how those standing up to extensive corruption within the institution were being intimidated and even killed. Recently, the fightback being led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, received a major boost. But for over a decade, he was hiding out in Constantia, living the high life with his beauty queen wife and entourage while socialising with other ex-patriate Bulgarians. Now Kamenov is dead, brutally assassinated with his family and staff. The murders remain a mystery despite an ongoing police investigation. It seems Eastern European criminals have come to Cape Town to set up stations for drug trafficking and the exploitation of South Africa’s unprotected coastline, its porous ports and lacklustre policing. The UK has also announced that it will now consider fully-vaccinated visitors from certain countries, including South Africa, as unvaccinated – a move experts say isn’t based on science. Given her obvious youth, patients and families alike can be a little sceptical when first meeting her. But she is the doctor on call and, as she moves from ward to ward, Dr Thibela proudly shows off her medical skills. And she’s not alone. Around the country, young doctors – barely into adulthood – are entering the state healthcare service. Their mission: saving lives.
