In December 2015, investigative journalist, Sabelo Skiti, stumbled upon a story about a well-known lawyer in the Eastern Cape claiming to be fighting the good fight for children born with disabilities in the province’s poorer communities. He was helping them take the Department of Health to court for medical negligence with the multi-million-rand pay-outs offering a chance of a better life. Trouble was the lawyer was stealing the money meant for the mostly semi-literate mothers of children living with cerebral palsy. Greedy and unrepentant, he exploited their desperation without ever intending for them to see a cent of their pay-outs. Skiti’s story prompted the Special Investigating Unit to take a closer look and yet, seven years later, the rogue lawyer continues to slither from their clutches. Carte Blanche investigates. In South Africa, almost 3500 children are dumped every year by their parents, many of them new-borns. Dr Roxanne Thornton is a foetal osteologist and by studying the skeletal remains of these children, she can uncover how the baby died. By piecing together the evidence in the bones, she’s ensuring at least some justice for these forgotten babies. Even before becoming a teacher, he founded an NGO to develop young people through sport. Last year, we told the story of what Jono and the pupils in his care managed to achieve through Sport for Lives, raising millions for schoolmates in need. Following our broadcast, a local benefactor stepped up to boost their mission. Now, boasting an additional 30 coaches, the organisation teaches literacy and sports in five schools every day. We celebrate a man who embodies the commitment not to turn away from suffering and instead pay every gain forward to drive personal and community transformation.
