Despite being cash-strapped, the municipality established a development agency tasked with boosting tourism and economic development; an agency that is now cashing in on major projects funded by the municipality and its ratepayers. In East London, what should’ve been a world-class beachfront upgrade has disintegrated into nothing more than a glorified “stoep”, while the bill for the Waterworld Fun Park revamp has ballooned to an eye-watering R120 million. When former President Jacob Zuma accused senior state prosecutor Billy Downer of leaking confidential medical information to journalist Karyn Maughan, she couldn’t have imagined how severely it would impact her life. For several months, Zuma pursued a private prosecution of both, placing Maughan in the crosshairs of some of the former president’s staunchest supporters. In court, Downer and Maughan emerged victorious. But she endured such violent online vitriol that she was forced to retreat to her family home. As a journalist, she’s not alone. It seems South Africa’s judiciary is being used as a battleground to harass and intimidate journalists and prevent them from doing their work. That was almost the case for a group of Carte Blanche viewers who had rolled up their sleeves to help disabled children at the state-run Ikwezi Lokusa Special School in the Eastern Cape. In September this year, our investigation exposed gross negligence and human rights violations at the boarding school, with vulnerable children left to fend for themselves. It was a story that moved many of our viewers into action, arranging trucks full of donations for the children. But when it was time to deliver, the volunteers were locked out of the school while the provincial Department of Education did nothing to intervene.
