Not so Qute?

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. It’s something few parents of children with severe disabilities ever discuss – at least not openly: the personal toll measured in stress and frustration. In some homes, the burden can become so isolating and depressing that parents sometimes keep children locked indoors for days at a time. In the Western Cape, state-sponsored Iris House Children’s Hospice provides a vital free service that gives parents much-needed respite from the pressures of raising children with disabilities. But it’s a service under threat. By the end of April, drastic budget cuts across various departments and provinces threaten to substantially reduce Iris House’s income. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟯𝟭 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. The City of Johannesburg (COJ) is building an informal settlement for displaced residents. With a 500 000 housing backlog, the city has repeatedly failed to deliver on its housing projects, leaving thousands of residents without adequate homes. Last year, when 77 people died in a massive blaze at the Usindiso building downtown, the city’s skewed priorities and lack of preparedness were exposed. Every municipality is required to provide temporary shelters for residents caught in a major disaster – but the COJ hadn’t made any arrangements. So, it built 300 one-room, paper-thin tin shacks at an eye-watering R4.2 million. But should shacks cost ratepayers millions of rands? Carte Blanche investigates. In April 2019, a newborn baby died after a trusted midwife failed to react when the infant displayed signs of distress in the womb. But this wasn’t the midwife’s first victim, or her last. In almost a decade, several children have either died or been severely disabled, allegedly because of this midwife’s actions. And despite losing her licence, she is still practicing. So, why has the South African Nursing Council (SANC), the regulatory body responsible for holding her accountable, failed to stop this registered nurse from operating? And did the Council do enough to prevent this well-known midwife from hurting more mothers and their children? But like so many other animals living on the southernmost continent, their lives are increasingly impacted by global warming. These birds are an important piece of the puzzle as scientists study our rapidly changing climate. Antarctica is shrinking as rising ocean temperatures steadily thaw the glaciers that have been frozen for millennia. Carte Blanche travelled to Antarctica to meet researchers and scientists who are studying this ice-covered continent for new clues to help save our planet.
