𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟱 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. They call themselves the Betereinders, a play on the never-say-die Bittereinders - the Afrikaans resistance campaign that held back the British Empire during the South African War in the early 1900s. But the Betereinders are on a different mission, quite literally dedicated to a better end for their country. They want to create a better South Africa for all, one good deed at a time: from fixing potholes to teaching maths and building schools. They believe that fixing South Africa truly begins when people meet each other outside their familiar, all-too-comfortable worlds. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟲 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. In a quiet, isolated village in the Eastern Cape, nurses prepare for the day shift at a local clinic. Tholeni near Gcuwa in the Eastern Cape is one of the most impoverished villages in the area - unemployment is high and most families rely on grants for survival. But last year, even the government-sponsored social relief and food parcels couldn’t save seven children from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). The children died within three months of each other. Theirs are the tragic faces of an under-reported and existential crisis in the country’s poorest regions: kwashiorkor, a painful condition often affecting children starved of proper nutrition. In South Africa, among the two wealthiest countries on the continent, around 15 000 children required hospitalisation because of the condition. It’s a crisis of hunger that’s spread throughout the country and government seems powerless to respond. Carte Blanche investigates. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟵 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯. In the leafy suburbs of Pretoria, there’s a growing tide of mistrust and frustration as a once-respected chartered accountant finds herself in the midst of a forensic investigation. Her disheartened clients allege disturbing delays and puzzling bank withdrawals in the winding up of deceased estates. The investigator is sifting through mountains of paperwork and bank accounts, tracking transactions that link this sophisticated, jet-setting professional and her bookkeeper to a web of hidden irregularities. These allegedly include forged signatures and stolen identities, mysterious changes in company papers and unexplained cash withdrawals and deposits. But this alleged scamster wasn’t just taking from any client: she seemingly targeted those at their most vulnerable – long-time clients and friends dealing with the passing of a loved one. While both the accountant and the bookkeeper have gone to ground, they blame each other for the crimes and misdemeanours of which they stand accused. Carte Blanche investigates.
