Matrics in Antarctica 2023

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟱 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. Huddled together on an Antarctic ice sheet, a colony of emperor penguins feed and raise their chicks. But like so many other animals living on the southernmost continent, their lives are increasingly impacted by global warming. These birds are an important piece of the puzzle as scientists study our rapidly changing climate. Antarctica is shrinking as rising ocean temperatures steadily thaw the glaciers that have been frozen for millennia. Carte Blanche travelled to Antarctica to meet researchers and scientists who are studying this ice-covered continent for new clues to help save our planet. For three years, adventurer Riaan Manser has visited Antarctica with matric volunteers to bring home the message of what climate change is doing to the world. In March 2023, we investigated a Swedish businessman and self-styled philanthropist who’d made sweeping promises to an impoverished community in the Limpopo town of Alldays. We uncovered how he’d failed to keep those promises, failing the area’s children and becoming embroiled in a dispute in which the local municipality appeared reluctant to intervene. It was an outcome for which the children and their desperate carers were paying the ultimate price. But happily, things have changed as the businessman has fled the country, and the children in need were finally given access to this life-changing centre. On 6 August 2023, we met Dr Keneiloe Molopyane as we headed down the Rising Star Cave in search of pieces of human history. An archaeologist and biological anthropologist, Dr Molopyane has been one of about 48 people to have entered the Dinaledi Chamber – a section of the cave where fossils belonging to at least 15 hominins believed to have been intentionally placed there as part of a ritual. Masa Kekana chatted to “Dr Bones” about paving the way for other aspiring female archaeologists, being an underground astronaut, and making discoveries that could alter the way we view human evolution.
