Last year, Carte Blanche reported on allegations of unwarranted brutality and violence when police arrested people for breaking COVID-19 lockdown regulations. Now, we revisit the dilemma of at least 400,000 South Africans arrested for offences ranging from not wearing masks to allegedly breaking curfew. Many spent time behind bars or paid hefty fines of up to R5000, and several, still, were let go with the option of signing an admission of guilt. At the time, it helped them not spend time in police custody. But in the long run, itโ€™s saddled them with criminal records that are hampering life as they know it โ€“ with no indication from government on whether these might be expunged after the pandemic. #CarteBlanche

In the Eastern Cape, thousands suffer from severe malnutrition. Itโ€™s a condition that has led to the deaths of at least seven children in the province, and a crisis that requires significant funding and political will to resolve. But in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, home to one of the provinceโ€™s biggest cities, the priority seems to be multi-million rand vanity projects that have become a financial drain on the municipalityโ€™s coffers. Despite being cash-strapped, the municipality established a development agency tasked with boosting tourism and economic development; an agency that is now cashing in on major projects funded by the municipality and its ratepayers. In East London, what shouldโ€™ve been a world-class beachfront upgrade has disintegrated into nothing more than a glorified โ€œstoepโ€, while the bill for the Waterworld Fun Park revamp has ballooned to an eye-watering R120 million.
