In Alberton, Gauteng, beloved choir master Ida Strydom and her merry band of choristers are turning the town into their own rehearsal stage as they prepare for this year's Christmas celebrations. Tannie Ida is a bubbly 72-year-old with an incredible passion for music dating back to 1994 when she founded The Cantare Children’s Choir. But she didn’t stop there and, through her passion for music, she’s impacted the lives of many children. Recently, Harmonia – a choir full of talented young women – performed at the beautiful Thaba Eco Hotel and Tussen Twee Koppies. But for a country already battling massive youth unemployment and an adult literacy crisis, it’s emerged that close to 80 per cent of grade 4 learners cannot read with understanding in any of the eleven official languages. Government was warned of the crisis and, in 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa promised to prioritise reading through a National Reading Plan. But, through exclusive access, Carte Blanche shows how Department of Education documents reveal a plan in disarray, continuing to fail our children. But Mike Wang is no ordinary pianist. He immigrated to South Africa with his family when he was just eight years old. Now, at just 16, he recently won the National Youth Music Competition, a prestigious event focusing on young classical musicians. With flavours like bubble gum, toffee crunch, and berry blaze, it’s clear that vapes increasingly target the youth. But flirting with vapes has turned into an addiction for some, with experts forecasting that those who start using nicotine at a young age have greater nicotine dependence than those who start later. As even a tiny amount of nicotine has a substantive impact on the teenage brain, Carte Blanche probes the latest research showing three in ten school children reaching for their e-cigarettes within an hour of waking up. While the booming vaping market is not regulated in South Africa, will a law aiming to tax e-cigarettes and related products nip this worrying trend in the bud.
