But within minutes of meeting his love match, he knew something was horribly wrong. What followed was a terrifying ordeal of beatings, torment, and robbery from which he escaped alive but with deep psychological scars. What’s more, he’s not the only victim: In a worrying trend, opportunistic criminals are using online dating apps to “catfish”, blackmail and rob people whose only desire is to find love or a fleeting romance. Many of those who’ve fallen victim to these crimes say they’ve received little support from the police, and the app developers are refusing responsibility. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟬 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮. In small-town Western Cape, a 13-year-old boy never made it home after spending the afternoon with a friend. CCTV footage later emerged showing young Jerobejin van Wyk being chased down by a bakkie on that fateful day in February, apparently just moments after picking fruit from a private garden. Behind the wheel was Daniel Smit, now behind bars and awaiting trial for the child’s murder. Carte Blanche travels to Klawer, a dusty and troubled town, to try and unravel what could possibly have led to the killing and whether – as is claimed by some – it was a ritual murder or simply brutal but opportunist violence.

In Mpumalanga, landowners near its Emalahleni electricity hub  say power lines  running through their properties have become the latest target for cable thieves. It’s a significant and unwanted challenge for a utility already struggling to meet electricity demand and generally failing to keep the lights on. The MO is simple: criminal syndicates - possibly operating on insider information – wait for overhead transmission lines to be switched off for maintenance before swooping for their loot.
