It was the long-awaited fulfilment of a promise to those in need of mental healthcare services in a province desperate for psychiatric facilities. But five years after it was finally opened, whistleblowers have come forward describing a facility that’s in urgent need of attention. And for once, a lack of funds isn’t the problem. When their son - just 15 - became violent and endured bouts of severe depression, eventually dropping out of school, they sought medical help. After a year filled with hospital visits, Josh was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, a condition on the spectrum that affects the ability to communicate and socialise. The diagnosis was the turning point for Kathy and Andrew who decided that saving their only child meant taking drastic steps as a family. They quit their jobs to take him on a “Birding Big Year”: 365 days to spot and document 1000 species of birds. And so began a year of adventure that would eventually save Josh and provide him with much-needed purpose. It's claimed he pilfered millions in medical payouts from the Department of Health by manipulating the mothers of children born with cerebral palsy and pocketing the millions meant for their care. It’s a legal scandal that went on for years while the Legal Practice Council (LPC) – the profession’s statutory oversight body - looked on. Now, the Constitutional Court has finally ruled on Nonxuba’s suspension and, inspired by our investigation, some of South Africa’s top legal minds have come together to fight for the children.
