It’s home to the Master’s Office that administers deceased estates and oversees liquidations - some involving major companies under investigation for millions made in the state capture years. Among the liquidators' responsibilities is attempting to recover money owed to creditors. Cloete Murray was the driving force in the liquidation of BOSASA, a company at the centre of serious allegations of fraud and corruption and owing substantial amounts to creditors including SARS. Murray wasn’t afraid of asking difficult questions of the many company directors he investigated and there were attempts to remove him from the Bosasa case that went as high as the Supreme Court of Appeal. None was successful. Murray’s story is inextricably linked to those of two senior former officials in the Master’s Office who believe they were removed because of their role in Murray’s appointment to the Bosasa liquidation. Last year, Carte Blanche told this story, and interviewed Cloete Murray. But on Saturday he and his son were shot and killed in what is believed to have been an assassination. Last year, a three-year-old toddler was brutally mauled to death by two aggressive pit bulls. The young boy is just one of several who’ve died or been severely injured by this unpredictable breed. Originally bred as fighting dog - able to kill opponents quickly and viciously while enduring excruciating pain - critics say it’s no wonder there’s now a pit bull problem. Poor breeding coupled with a genetic code wired for violence are a blueprint for tragedy. Others, though, argue that the animals’ owners are to blame. But in the new South Africa, these animals, with their specialised crime-combatting and search-and-rescue skills, have endeared themselves to the public. They’re bred as valuable, highly trained assets for the police service. Earlier this year, a contract worth close to R26 million to purchase more dogs over the next three years was awarded to four contractors. But, controversially, 214 dogs were deemed untrainable and handed over to the NSPCA in September. A troubling development considering the massive shortage of dogs within the service. But pollution from a defunct sewerage system and poor bylaw enforcement is seeing this pristine life-source wasted.
