But without warning, career woman and mom of three young children, Kim Ballantine, lost her voice. Spasmodic dysphonia, a rare and serious neurological condition, caused her vocal cords to spasm, leaving her unable to breathe and, on several occasions, at death’s door. Meals were puréed and sipped through a straw but often triggered life-threatening spasms of Kim’s vocal cords. Doctors couldn’t find the cause of her condition, and she was told she would never speak again. And then, just as the family was learning to adapt to a new normal, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer. In June last year, Dylan was beaten and later died after being hit by two cars on the R23 between Heidelberg and Balfour. On the night of his death, he attended a sweet sixteenth birthday party, but our investigation reveals that it may have been anything but an innocent party for teenagers. It has been a year since Dylan’s death and no arrests have been made. His family, battling to find closure, started their own investigation and are slowly piecing together the puzzle of Dylan’s brutal death. Comprising a crew of mostly volunteers, the Logos Hope is no ordinary vessel. It’s a floating book fair. With over 5000 book titles covering subjects that range from science to medicine and even children’s literature, it’s a book lovers’ dream. Now, the Logos Hope has moved to Cape Town, where avid bookworms can also get a chance to get their heads stuck in.
