Home to a tourist favourite - the Hole in the Wall, also affectionately known as “izi Khaleni” or “the place of thunder” - it should be teeming with visitors. But few are brave enough to tackle the treacherous pothole-ridden 75-kilometre stretch of tarred road to get there. It’s just one example of the shocking state of many roads around the country; deep ditches and craters left unattended for so long, there’s often little trace of tar. It’s a symptom of the mismanagement and decline in service delivery plaguing municipalities across the country. Earlier this month, Carte Blanche investigated a multi-million rand Ponzi scheme that involved purchasing luxury vehicles without ever paying a loan instalment. The wheels eventually came off in spectacular fashion. Then, days after our broadcast, viewers sent us stories of how they had fallen victim to a more complex but similar scam. We investigate an intricate “ride to own” scheme which had some motorists owning multiple vehicles that they weren’t paying for and never took possession of. Now, the banks are owed more than R500 million and numerous vehicles have gone missing – stripped and resold for parts by a shady dealership. But three-year-old Simthandile “Sim” Tshabalala wasn’t interested in cartoons or anime. He was spending his playtime obsessively watching golf. By four years old, his father, Bongani took action to help his son develop this interest for the game. It soon became clear that Sim had a golf swing that was well beyond his years. Now 11 years old, the golf prodigy has won multiple trophies. In 2020, he came second in his age group at the prestigious Australian Open. Now he has his sights set on following in the footsteps of his idol, Tiger Woods, to master the 18 holes.
