It’s been a busy couple of days for the volunteers at Karoo Donkey Sanctuary (KDS). Following Carte Blanche’s story on the trade in donkey skins, the KDS team have welcomed a further 100 donkeys to their farm. A day after the donkey auction in Hartswater, the KDS team was alerted that a buyer had backed out of a deal. “From what we can gather, the purchaser for the remaining 100 donkeys reneged on the deal and his payment was not forthcoming, We believe this is due to the media attention and his fears around being exposed,” KDS founder Jonno Sherwin says. KDS had little choice and ended up buying the remaining 100 donkeys.

Jonno reports that there was a large number of heavily pregnant mares among the rescued donkeys. Fortunately, they are all doing extremely well. Several foals were also reunited with their moms, resulting in great joy on the KDS farm.

The donkeys endured a stressful 10-hour drive from the Hartswater auction site to KDS, but were met with fresh feed, water, blankets and lots of love. Four days after the big rescue, the new mega herd is enjoying a life of freedom and long lazy days in the sun.
