It’s no secret, we’re a little obsessed at M-Net Movies and we never miss an opportunity to reward our like-minded fans. To show just how serious we are, M-Net Movies Premiere in association with Ster Kinekor and EFC, is celebrating the release of the boxing-inspired film, Southpaw, starring the legendary Jake Gyllenhaal, and we’ll be giving away a 6-week Southpaw-inspired training program with an EFC-affiliated gym to one lucky viewer.
Southpaw sees Gyllenhaal go through a remarkable body transformation to play Billy "The Great" Hope, a reigning junior middleweight boxing champion who has it all: a career, a family and an extravagant lifestyle to boot. If this sounds all too good to be true, tragedy intervenes and Billy loses everything. With the help of Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a former fighter, Billy walks a tough road to recover all he has lost.
Gyllenhaal’s training regime to play Billy was gruelling. Jake began training twice a day, which then intensified to six hours a day.
Jake’s mornings started with an eight-mile run five times a week, followed by a 30-minute rest break and then a bodyweight and core workout. It didn’t end there: if Gyllenhaal was going to play a boxer, he needed to build years of muscle memory in a short space of time; this meant that afternoons were about technique, footwork and agility. Skipping and high intensity boxing rounds with his trainers propelled Jake to achieve the unachievable: the body of a professional, world-champion boxer in under ten months.
Why is the film called Southpaw? Southpaw is a boxing term for a stance where the boxer has his right hand and right foot forward, and is the normal stance for a left-handed boxer. The corresponding stance for a right-handed boxer is orthodox and is a mirror image of the southpaw stance.
To stand a chance of getting your Southpaw body on, all you have to do is take a picture of your best southpaw stance and attach it to the entry form below along with your details.
Entries close on 7 September, so get your “Southpaw on” and show us what you’ve got!
